A personal account of Gugelot's early interest in science; education at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zurich, in the late 1930s; early 1940s and Ph.D. in 1945; a stay at Princeton University (1947-1956), after which he returned to the Instituut voor Kernphysisch Onderzoek, Amsterdam; and his return to the U. S. in 1966 to a professorship at University of Virginia.
